Science in Merthyr Tydfil
Merthyr Tydfil has science in its DNA. As the world's first industrial town, it was a place where engineering, chemistry and innovation changed the world — from Richard Trevithick's pioneering steam locomotive, which made its historic first journey from Penydarren in 1804, to the iron and coal technology that powered the Industrial Revolution. That spirit of discovery continues today through science talks, STEM workshops and family discovery events across the town.
The area is also a stargazer's dream. Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons National Park), right on Merthyr's doorstep, is an International Dark Sky Reserve — one of the best places in the UK for astronomy. Throughout the year you'll find stargazing nights, astronomy talks and night-sky events taking advantage of some of the darkest skies in Wales. Closer to town, Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and local schools and community hubs host hands-on STEM sessions, science fairs and engineering workshops for all ages.
